Small Gifts Remove Real Barriers: Introducing $5 Friday

Every month, we meet people who are incredibly close to moving forward.

They've found a job but can't afford a replacement ID.

They've been approved for housing but can't cover renter's insurance.

They've done everything they're supposed to do, only to find one more bill standing between them and stability.

These aren't the challenges most people think about when they hear the word "homelessness." But for many of our neighbors, they're the difference between moving forward and staying stuck.

That's why we're launching $5 Friday.

On the last Friday of every month, we'll share the story of a guest whose journey was shaped by Make-A-Day's Stability Fund, our unrestricted fund that allows us to respond immediately when a small expense becomes a major barrier.

Some months that means covering a guests’ court fees.

Other times it means covering transportation to a job interview, reconnecting utilities, purchasing renter's insurance, or buying them a pair of shoes.

These aren't expenses that large grants often cover. They're also the expenses that can determine whether someone gets housed, keeps a job, or misses another opportunity.

Ron's Story

When Ron first met Make-A-Day, he wasn't asking for housing. He simply wanted a meal.

After years of moving between shelters and friends' couches, he'd grown tired of navigating systems that offered referrals but little follow-through. Every time he made progress, another obstacle appeared.

A housing scam wiped out the savings he had worked hard to build.

After finally finding an apartment, he discovered he still needed renter's insurance before he could move in.

Past-due utility bills threatened to delay his transition even further.

None of those barriers were overwhelming on their own.

Together, they kept him unhoused.

Through months of relationship-building, advocacy, and support, our team helped Ron remove those barriers one at a time. The Stability Fund covered expenses that traditional funding often cannot, including renter's insurance and utility costs that allowed him to move into his apartment.

Today, Ron remains housed.

He continues working with our team on budgeting, bill management, and building long-term stability.

His story reminds us that people don't fail because they lack potential. Too often, they face systems that leave no room for life's small setbacks.

Why $5 Matters

Five dollars won't solve homelessness.

But when hundreds of people choose to give $5, together those gifts become utility payments, application fees, prescriptions, gas cards, IDs, bus passes, and other small interventions that prevent much larger crises.

The Stability Fund gives Make-A-Day the flexibility to respond in the moment, when waiting isn't an option.
